Top Ten Best Modern Albums
I’ve been watching a lot of VH1’s TOp 100 Artists of All Time, and that got me thinking of my own top favorite artists. So here is the first of many, my favorite albums of the last decade.
10 Jamie Cullum - Twentysomething
The heart and soul of any twenty-something
9 Keane - Under the Iron Sea
Keane took their three piece sound to a whole other level with this album. It makes you comfortable thinking that bands no longer need guitars to make great music.
8 Hanson - Underneath
I don’t care what anyone thinks, this record is a must for this list. Its a enjoyable ride, and also leaves you wanting to listen to more. Its crazy to think that their record company rejected 300 songs they created which forced them to start their own label and leave those 300 songs behind. Then they make their best record to date. Like I said, Crazy. But I will say that their new record is not that far behind.
7 Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
My current obsession right now. Every time I try to identify my favorite song, another jumps out and takes over my top plays. Its melodic and seemingly chaotic at the same time, and I love every second of it.
6 David Gray - White Ladder
This by far is the best pop album to have come out in the last ten years. It has everything and then some. Every song is moving, heartfelt and incredible.
5 Kings of Leon - Only By the Night
Its hard to imagine that the first time I heard this album I didn’t like it. It just didn’t sound like the KOL that I had come to know and love over the years and was really disappointed with their new direction. Then the album was playing at a friends house during a party, and I guess the mix of alcohol and other people’s reaction to it really help me see the quality and value of this record, and now its one of my favorites. Every song stands on its own. Its just a shame I have to share it with so many people with terrible music taste, but hey at least now I can see them more. (I also really enjoy this cover.)
4 Muse - Black Holes & Revelation
This is not an album to just play in the background. It is an experience you have let yourself be enveloped in. Its a musical journey that is worth the effort. This album to me a modern day pink floyd record. It has all the elements and leaves you sublimely satisfied because of it.
3 Ray LaMontagne - Trouble
Simply… acoustic soul. If there was ever someone to covet for their musical ability, Ray’s the guy. I wish I could just have his talent for one day, because it would be one incredible day. But at least I have this record to glean from in the mean time.
2 Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak
Beauty in its rawest form.
1 Wolfmother - Wolfmother
If you’ve ever wanted another Led Zepplin album that pays tribute to their best work while also offering something new, this album is here to fill that void. Its hard to deny it influence, but its a blessing not a curse. They pay homage it the best way possible, making their great music. What they bring to the table is epic and mesmerizing and without a doubt the best record of the last ten years.
So what are your thoughts, opinions, lists?
