Top Ten Favorite Covers by Popular Artists

If there’s one thing that makes me giddier than a little school girl is really good cover. With the advent of glee (and its hit or miss) covers, I decided to pay homage to some of the best covers out there. This will probably be a three part post because there are so many good resources/covers out there, and I want to do each list justice. So here is is My Top Ten Favorite Covers by Popular Artists.

UPDATE: There was a huge glaringly oversight on this list that was brought to my attention by my loving itunes catalog. In lieu of this discovery and in effort to ensure this list’s legitimacy, Pixie Lott’s ‘Use Somebody’ has been removed to fix this clear oversight.

10 Don’t Cha - Colbie Caillat

Never been a big fan of hers, outside of bubbly, but if she made more songs like this cover I would wish my girlfriend was hot like her.

9 Mad World - Gary Jules

Gary Jules took an already haunting Tears for Fears song, and magnified it by 1000. Donnie Darko would not have been as memorable as it was if not for this cover. Its a shame that most people only know this version thanks to Adam Lambert, but the reason Lambert’s version was good was because of Gary Jules.

8 Everlasting Love - Jamie Cullum

This song is from the Bridget Jones’ Diary sequel, and its amazing I even discover it because of that fact. Jamie has done several great covers (pretty much his whole first album), but this is the cover that really gets in your head and doesn’t stop. But its one of those good stucks that makes you want to listen to the song over and over.

7 To Love Somebody - Ray Lamontagne & Damien Rice

This is a powerhouse cover, but its a shame they don’t team up and cover each other’s songs (or collaborate to create new material together). This is still good enough to get the job done…for now.

6 King of Wishful Thinking - William Fitzsimmons

I’m not gonna lie, I love the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Its the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, and William Fitzsimmons pays perfect homage to it.

5 Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine

I can’t believe this song didn’t make the list originally, but I knew I had to include once I remembered it. This is one the best covers of all time. The song itself is awesome, and I’d easily include it on my top favorites of all time. Yet I can’t decide on which version would be the one on that list, and for that reason it belongs in this list. (Its also on one of the greatest soundtracks ever fabricated… Garden State.)

4 Hurt - Johnny Cash

There’s nothing about this song that isn’t great. The fact that Johnny Cash sings it, the fact that he covered nine inch nails, and the fact that this song is amazing. Its the perfect exclamation point to a fantastic career and life. Cash didn’t need a bio pic about his life, this song says it all.

3 Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy

Its unfortunate that Eva’s life and career came to a tragic end in 1996 because she was destined for great things, but she did leave this incredible gift for people to enjoy. (I wanted to post this video, but youtube won’t let me embed it because of copyright issues)

2 Crazy - Ray LaMontagne

When Gnarls Barkley burst on the scene, I really liked this song. It was catchy and never got old. Then all the covers came…and went, until Ray LaMontagne put his seal of approval on it. Once I heard it, my obsession was all consuming. I think this cover blows the original out the water….unless you’re at a party or ever in need of something familiar and upbeat.

1 Wonderwall - Ryan Adams

There’s so much I could say, but I’ll let the song speaks for itself.

Honorable Mentions

Adele - To Make You Feel My Love

Joshua Radin - Only You

William Fitzsimmons - I Kissed A Girl

So what would you include? Let me hear your thoughts, opinions, ideas
